Ten Key Pieces for Seasonless Style in the Lowcountry

Let’s consider seasonless style. Sounds amazing, right? When it comes to building a well-curated wardrobe, seasonless staples are key.  To kickoff this blog, I’m going to focus on my go-to’s for year-round outfitting made simple.

For starters, it’s very important to assess your closet, as well as your personal style. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or glass of wine, take a step back and truly think:  Do you own too many printed tees?  How many pairs of jeans do you have that truly fit your body the way they should? Also, do you have any button-downs or blouses that have that coffee stain which becomes a forgotten burden each time you pull it off the hanger to iron?  If so, edit.  Rid yourself of anything that might be holding you back from seamless and stress-free dressing.

Shopping your closet has never been so much fun until you have a reason to do so. The changing season is the perfect time to edit your wardrobe and make any necessary alterations. Remain true to you and your personal style, of course.  Always be sure to weed out pieces where you can’t remember the last time it saw the light of day (or night), or at least stow some of these “specials” away in a box or suction bag for those “just in case” moments and reevaluate later. Either way, weed them out!

Today, fashion is really addressing all four seasons in texture, weight, and overall design.  Whether it be S/S fashion or F/W — curate your closet and save those pieces that will function no matter the weather or time of year.  Invest in these key additions, as they’ll serve you well time and time again.

For example, although the clothes on the runway for Paris Fashion week this year were for spring 2015, you’d never know the distinction given the varied sleeve lengths, lighter weight fabrics, buttery soft leathers, and seasonless suede.  Neutral and pastel colors, as usual, remain chic and rule in staple pieces throughout the year.

Lastly, let’s not forget the golden rule of seasonless dressing — layer! If temps drop unexpectedly, toss on another layer, and a pair of tights with those booties or pumps. So long as you don’t over do it, you won’t have to worry about looking too bulky, which is one of the biggest mistakes women make when the thermometer drops.

Here are my top ten picks that are sure to marry well with anything from your favorite pair of trousers, to a chunky knit, and even your most beloved sandals:

  1. The Trench: Essential, sleek and always appropriate for any occasion and weather forecast.

  1. The skinny jean: You’ll reach for these time and time again – whether you’re wearing them with a great pair of tall boots, a cool pair of clogs, or working with more of a legging style that’s ideal for flats, tunics and longer tees.

  1. The blouse or button-down: A basic button-down, light-weight flannel, and/or an everyday white or cream blouse in either silk or cotton is most certainly your answer to year-round dressing. You’ll find comfort in knowing that you can reach for this to pair with any skirt, pants, jeans, and even your favorite basic shift dress.

  1. The seasonless skirt: Whether it be knee-length, full, or A-line; choose a shape that suits your figure, and you’ll ease that into your spring wardrobe with pumps, a tee or blouse, and a statement piece just as easily as you can pull it on now with tights and heels, boots or flats.

  1. A statement necklace (or earrings): Whether it be a necklace to dress up a basic tee to take into evening or to pair with a simple shift for a wedding; you’ll find that this must-have will be used time and time again to jazz up the most casual looks, as well as your dressier frocks.

  1. The black (or navy) sheath: This classic dress will easily take you to brunch, weddings, church and back again, all year long with ease. Whether its mate be a pair of eye-catching heels and a clutch for the next soiree, or flats and a structured shoulder-bag for brunch; you’re all set either way.

Navy Sheath Dress

  1. The cashmere scarf: Yes, even in the humid south, you’ll find that a cashmere scarf can come in handy spring, summer, fall and winter.  It’s cozy, chic, luxurious, and suitable for all occasions.  If large enough, it can serve as your best friend on long plane rides, a cozy wrap to go out at night along with a dressy top and jeans. Given that most places have the A/C on high during warmer months, toss it in your tote (you never know), and of course, throw it on with your favorite coat this winter.  This accessory will be the investment piece you’ve been needing since your last discovery of the perfect statement necklace.

  1. The basic tee: This piece is a no-brainer with infinite layering possibilities — underneath a blazer, with a sweater and a pair of jeans, and of course with a flirty skirt or shorts for those warmer days. The basic tee in white and a few other neutral shades will prove to be not-so-basic after all.

  1. The blazer: The go-anywhere jacket: you’re appropriate for most anything in this chic addition, and you can seamlessly pull it together with skirts, jeans, shifts, tees, etc. Office to cocktails; you’re good to go with one that suits (no pun intended).

  1. Classic pumps: Be they nude or black. Leather or suede. Jeans, dresses, skirts; you name it. Your foot’s covered. An obvious “shoe-must” for that seasonless investment.

Having the necessary basics at the ready will address any and everything life throws your way, fashion-wise.  No matter the occasion, weather, or the economy (which is always unpredictable) it’s essential to look pulled together a lot of the time, and feel good knowing that you can throw the perfect look together in seconds.

Selecting clothes that speak to all four seasons is a no-fail solution to looking and feeling your best. Tossing in that seasonal piece or the latest trend will always keep those basics looking fresh, up-to-date, and of course, timeless!
