Right now we’re dealing with undulating temperatures, making Charleston what it is this time of year — unpredictable. Heading into 2015 and out into randomly cold temps, rain, sleet, and sometimes even snow, it’s important to make sure you’re protecting your skin with the right products that are entirely necessary for maintaining a healthy, radiant glow.
Among other great beauty shops in town, today we’re honing in on two locally owned cosmetic stores — one of which has been around for well over a decade, Stella Nova Flagship store and salon on King Street, and Pink Dot Beauty Bar which is fairly new to Charleston, having opened its doors in 2013, and located on Charleston’s bustling Meeting Street. Both shops are fully stocked with product options to suit any and everyone’s regimen. Each establishment is well-equipped with the latest brands, some of which are very innovative and new to the market, creating quite a stir in the cosmetic and skincare industry. Other lines, too, which have been loved for years, can be found for the more “tried and true” arsenal.
What makes each boutique unique, is that Stella Nova is a full service salon in the back of a multi-sectioned beauty store, providing a full range of professional hair services as well as cosmetics and haircare. Their retail boutique has remained on the corner of Charleston’s highly trodden King and Society streets since I can remember, and I’ve lived in Charleston for nearly 15 years. A favorite “haunt” for me, being the product junkie that I am, Stella Nova is one of Charleston’s original, full-service beauty stores.
Pink Dot’s Beauty Bar can’t be missed on Meeting. With their irresistibly cute signage out front, you needn’t worry about passing that signature pink dot! This store is a pop-in beauty bar, providing full makeup services in house, as well as beauty events for large groups, such as bachelorette and bridal parties, and even baby showers to glamorize the mom-to-be, as well as yourself, with products from various, all-natural lines. Pink Dot’s second level is reserved for hosting those fun, intimate gatherings and events.
With a very desirable array to choose from in makeup, fragrance, haircare, bath and body; there’s never a need for feeling blah on those chilly, dreary Charleston days. When a new lipstick or fragrance could be the ticket for that perfect pick-me-up, these stores are at your service!
To reclaim your glow this winter, replenishing your skin with what it’s clearly lacking is of upmost importance. One of today’s most widely sought-after brands is called Glam Glow. Are you surprised? They cleverly named this brand in a very honest way, actually. The products are currently all the rage because they actually work and will erase any puffiness around the eye area and plump the skin with the moisture it deserves. This season two of my favorite products can both be found at Pink Dot:
The Glam Glow Brightmud Eye Treatment involves a pack of single use eye masks to be used around the eyes’ orbital areas. Not only do you leave it on for mere minutes, but once you’ve wiped off the soothing gel, you can definitely see a difference — brighter, smoother skin with less puff and fewer dark circles.
The second must-have from this new and exciting line is Glam Glow Thirsty Mud. This facial mask is infused with some of the most innovative and effective ingredients being used in today’s skin renewal products. For a deep hydration treatment, this is your go-to. Not to mention, this product isn’t only loved by women of all ages, but it can also serve as a calming, replenishing after-shave treatment as well! Let’s face it, men deserve to be glamorous at times, too. 😉
Last, but not least, in the skin improvement category, Pink Dot also currently carries the cult favorite balm, Eve Lom’s Kiss Mix! As luxurious as it is protective, this cooling lip treat is the perfect solution for chapped lips this season with its inclusion of Zinc, a necessary ingredient for calming sore, fragile skin. The balm can also be used as a base under lipstick, providing a slight plumping effect. Its finish has a nice gloss that’s slightly pearlized, making it a great multi-tasker as a lip color moisture base, or atop your favorite shade for added shine and color longevity!
In addition to the winter skin prep and fixes, Stella Nova’s shop carries the almighty Clarisonic brushes and kits — a true necessity to every skincare routine, as it’s meant to thoroughly cleanse your skin better than other means. A deep cleansing system in conjunction with a Clarisonic will ensure your skin to be smooth and flake-free, fully ready to absorb all of the added moisture your skin requires in January!
Turning the page to cosmetics, Winter 2015’s preferred look is a minimal, glowing well-polished face, where an oil-free primer (great for all skin types) and a tinted moisturizer that has nice pigment will do the trick in the coverage department, while still remaining light and non-cakey or heavy. Tinted moisturizers and sheer, light-weight foundations are desired over most powder foundations and thick liquids — especially this time of year when skin tends to be much dryer. If oily skin is an issue, no matter the time of year, a light, sheer talc-free powder tapped onto the t-zone is all you’ll need to keep oily shine at bay — not to mention your oil-free primer, also pictured, will keep your makeup in place. Both available at Stella Nova.
A fresh, glowing face amidst winter’s gloom, also calls for the perfect nude lip. Whether it leans more toward the peachy, pink or bronze ends of the nude spectrum, be sure to select a color that compliments your skin tone. If you have pink undertones, stay away from pinky nudes. This hue will only exacerbate a pink or ruddy complexion. A true nude that would appear more neutral in tone, but with enough color so that it’s not an exact match to your lips, for example, would be a flattering nude for you.
The highly sought-after Kevyn Aucoin makeup line can be found at Stella Nova, and the wide range of nude shades come in the form of glosses, balmy lip sheers, and richly pigmented lipsticks. There’s a shade to suit every skin tone. Here are a few that I pulled from the selection.
Lastly, to really get that glow, a great illuminating skin-enhancer truly is key. Back at Pink Dot, you’ll find the RMS Living Luminizer — a must-have in my makeup bag, as well as plenty of others. A dab of this coconut-oil based, miracle balm on the tops of your cheek and brow bones and you’ll look like you’re radiating youth and wellness. Guaranteed.
Top off these tips with a light dusting of a peachy cheek color to brighten your complexion even more; add a touch of eyeliner in a universally flattering espresso shade, or simply define your lashes with a coat of black mascara, and voila! You’re good to go, so glow, baby, glow!
